The Creative Act of Decluttering
A Guide to Boosting Productivity and Inspiration
I try to keep my creative space (s) clutter-free and organized. I really, really try. But somehow it always seems to find its way back to the crazy messy state I always try to avoid. I can make an honest effort to keep it spotless but just one involved and free-spirited creative session can bring it back. When creating, the last thing I am thinking about is putting things back where they belong. Most of the time, things are thrown about just as free and loose as the attention I put into my work. And, when I am done, my creative energy is spent - the last thing I want to do is put everything away. In addition, isn’t so much easier to leave everything in the state you left it so you can pick up right where you left off?
This is me - a chaotic creative that often finds themselves working within a chaotic mess of creative clutter. My intentions are genuine - I even add organization to my to-do list but I always seem to end up right back where I started - mess.
One thing I try hard not to do is let my creative clutter seep into my living spaces - I have to admit this used to be the case. I do have designated spaces or corners where I work but at times my spaces may shift at will. Currently, I am working on my Goddess Project challenges on my coffee table in front of my TV.
I do wish I could be more organized and have one of those creative spaces you see perfectly curated on social media - you know those clean, sparkly well-organized spaces. I say to myself - I could get so much done if I could just declutter and organize. So today, (actually a week ago) I decided I was going to try to condition my creative brain to let go of the chaos and get organized. Easier said than done. I admit I am the person who will start a cleaning project and get bored, overwhelmed, and give up on it mid-way. I am not going to let that happen here.
So how can I do it this time and get it to stick? Well, I have decided to work in small (very small) sections. Giving myself small, manageable tasks each day. For example, yesterday I had a goal to organize a small pile of papers on my cluttered desk, I declutter a small section of a shelf by my bed and organize my colored pencils. Small and manageable.- that is the key. Each day, I give myself small tasks to complete. Each task is a build-up to the overall task of decluttering larger areas filled with art supplies, stuff, and more stuff. So far, it has worked and I was even able to get my husband to help too!
So here are a few benefits and tips I found in my search on how to declutter my creative mess - I will keep you updated on my progress along the way and if the benefits are benefiting.
The Benefits of a Decluttered Space
Increased Productivity: When your workspace is organized and clutter-free, you'll be able to find what you need quickly and easily, reducing distractions and increasing your focus.
Improved Inspiration: A clean and tidy space can help to stimulate your creativity. When you're not surrounded by clutter, your mind is free to wander and explore new ideas.
Reduced Stress: Clutter can contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety. By decluttering your creative space, you can create a more calming and productive environment.
Tips for Decluttering Your Creative Space
Start Small: Don't try to declutter everything at once. Start with a small area, like your desk or a drawer, and gradually work your way through the rest of your workspace.
Categorize Your Items: Group similar items together to help you stay organized. For example, keep all of your drawing supplies in one drawer, and all of your writing materials in another.
Get Rid of Unnecessary Items: Be ruthless when it comes to getting rid of items you no longer need or use. Donate or sell anything that's taking up space but isn't serving a purpose.
Create Storage Solutions: Invest in storage solutions that work for your specific needs. This could include shelves, drawers, or baskets.
Regular Maintenance: Once you've decluttered your space, make a commitment to maintaining it. Set aside time each week to tidy up and put things back in their place.
Decluttering your creative space can be a rewarding experience that boosts your productivity, inspiration, and overall well-being. HAPPY DECLUTTERING CREATIVE!! I am off to IKEA for a few organizing bins to give supplies their own home. Wish me LUCK!
